Another portrait of one of my best friends. I’m always nervous asking people if I can paint them but she’s letting me paint her as much as I want. I think it’s good that I keep doing portraits of her now and again as each time I can see how much I’ve improved in getting closer to her likeness. I used photographic reference for most of her. The hand holding an arrow and blue drapery were done from imagination because I wanted something symbolic of Venus – I also wanted to practice some painting without reference, which is difficult to say the least. I copied the background from John Singer Sargent’s portrait of Édouard Pailleron.
This is the smallest painting I’ve done of her at 20cm x 25cm (8″x10″).
